Restoring and Hand-Painting Historic Signage Four Stories Up!

After spending a lot of time four stories up, we’re back on the ground! We’ve completed the job for the Odyssey House, located in the former Bohn Bros. Ford building in New Orleans. It’s an historical spot where the original steel frame and much of the façade survived a fire in 2002.

This was the part of the building that required restoration. We were charged with restoring the original lettering at the top of the structure. Check out our videos below that show and describe the phases of our work on this amazing and challenging project!

Now that we’re back on terra firma after being four stories up, we wanted to show the finished job! We completed recreating and hand-painting the lettering on the façade of this historic space in New Orleans. It was an honor to bring this project on the old Bohn Brothers Ford building. It is now set to become part of Odyssey House Louisiana, a great non-profit that helps people battle addiction. Sometimes our work takes us to unexpected places and exhilarating places – like four stories up! We’re recreating the original lettering on the historic 1920’s Bohn Ford building that’s helping revive the Broadmoor corridor in New Orleans. The structure was damaged in a fire in 2002, leaving only the four outer walls and steel beams. It will soon be the home of Odyssey House, a non-profit that assists those battling addiction. As a building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s imperative to preserve the original design as much as possible. To that end, we’re hand-painting and hand-lettering the wording. The first step was to trace and measure the remnants of the existing lettering in order to make templates which we will use in the final rendering on the building’s façade. We’re back four stories up with the next phase of this project at Odyssey House, the old historic Bohn Ford building in New Orleans! We’re restoring the original lettering on the structure’s façade. In the first phase (see our previous video a post or two ago…), we traced the remnants of the lettering and brought it back to our shop. From there, we created templates that we are using here to hand-paint the lettering. It’s challenging but thrilling to work on this project and have such a great view!
